What is stretching and how does it affect the body
Stretching (translated from English - stretching) is a set of exercises aimed at improving the flexibility and elasticity of muscles, strengthening ligaments, developing joint mobility and maintaining the body in tone. Muscle fibers are arranged in such a way that during physical activity, microtraumas appear in them, which heal over a certain period of time, can cause unpleasant sensations and hinder muscle development. Stretching minimizes the risk of microtraumas, allows you to gently stretch muscles and promotes their faster development. The training is based on alternating muscle tension and relaxation, which allows you to relieve general tension and return the body to lightness and energy.
Stretching is usually divided into health and sports. Sports stretching is used mainly by athletes to achieve maximum results, and health stretching is exactly what you can find in the group exercise schedule of almost every fitness club.
Stretching training does not require special training, it can be done at any age as a separate workout, or combined with other sports in the format of prestretching and poststretching, the first of which we naturally use before starting classes, in order to prepare the joints for further work, raise the heart rate and warm up the muscles. It can be the same exercises or a set of exercises with the difference that in prestretching we do dynamic actions, and in poststretching we do the same exercise statically. Such exercises are also called warm-ups and cool-downs, and are often performed before or after dance lessons, Pilates, and some other fitness areas.
Stretching has no history of creation and a specific founder of the direction, and most experts consider the history of all ancient medicine to be the basis for the creation of stretching. Stretching is a certain evolution of certain exercises that have been used since the times of Ancient Rome by athletes to improve the condition of muscles and joints before competitions and reduce the likelihood of injuries.
Stretching acquired the status of a sports direction in the 50s of the last century, when a special system of exercises was developed in Sweden, which was aimed at deep muscle training and the development of their elasticity. Over time, stretching moved to fitness clubs, teachers and special training programs appeared. Now stretching classes are very popular and the price of each fitness club or dance studio includes training.
The human body is created rationally, everything in it is interconnected and interdependent. Each muscle of our body has a strictly defined function, must bear a full load and rest well. The normal functioning of the whole organism depends on the quality of muscle work, like any other organ. Muscular inactivity in combination with constant nervous tension negatively affects our health. Meanwhile, a modern person, especially living in the city, is often deprived of the opportunity to fully satisfy the body's need for movement. If the lack of motor activity can be filled by running or visiting the pool, then additional efforts must be made to relieve nervous tension.
Stretching is another way to increase motor activity and simultaneously reduce emotional and mental tension. The essence of the system is that when stretching the whole body or its individual parts in the appropriate directions, we achieve alternating tension and relaxation in the muscles. Moreover, by changing the force and direction of the load, using different stretching techniques and combining them in certain combinations, we can use different muscle groups. When stretching, as well as during special stretching exercises, there is a change in short-term muscle tension and relaxation, which allows a person to fully relax and recover in a short time.
By influencing the muscles with stretching, we increase motor activity, improve joint mobility, and contribute to the earliest possible restoration of full-fledged movements in case of injuries, diseases, nervous overstrain and stressful situations. After stretching, relaxation comes much faster and is deeper than before it. Systematic stretching exercises will allow you to learn to fully relax your body and, therefore, relieve both muscular and emotional tension.
What to pay attention to when doing stretching
To feel great and be in balance, all the muscles of our body must be in normal tone. To transfer muscles from hypertonicity to normal tone, we very often use stretching. I will give an example on the biceps: if your muscle is very spasmodic during the day and you need to sharply straighten your arm, the muscle may not have time to relax and this leads to its injury or even rupture. If the muscles, on the contrary, are overgrown and we make a sharp movement to extend, we injure the elbow joint itself and its ligaments. Therefore, our muscle must be both strong and elastic at the same time.
In stretching, as a rule, there is no specific warm-up, we warm up the joints of the whole body for 5-7 minutes and prepare the muscles for work. The temperature in the room should be taken into account. The colder it is, the longer it takes to warm up, in any case, the body temperature should be stable and normal. We don't work in the cold, it's dangerous for injuries.
Also, don't forget that up to the age of 21 our ligaments can stretch and take on a certain shape, but at a more mature age they already have a certain length that has been formed and do not stretch. They can only receive micro-tears and micro-traumas. Therefore, we work with ligaments very carefully.
If you did the splits as a child, then abandoned it for a long time and came to training as an adult with a desire to do it again, your ligaments remember this state, they are already stretched and you, in principle, are able to achieve the desired result, but if you have not done the splits before, then. You may be able to do the longitudinal splits, but the transverse splits are most likely not for you anymore, because the ligaments have formed a fixed length and you will simply have to tear them.
Indications and contraindications for stretching exercises
I do not recommend stretching if you have osteochondrosis of the spine - strong twisting movements of the back are unacceptable. For girls and women on critical days, stretching has no contraindications in principle, but increased loads should be avoided. During the first trimester of pregnancy, stretching exercises are contraindicated, but you can start them at 5-6 months. For this purpose, special programs have been developed aimed at strengthening the joints and muscles of the back, which are under increased strain during pregnancy. Of course, training is possible only after consulting a doctor. After childbirth, you can resume training after 3-4 months.
